Every believer has a mission in life. We get rooted, strengthened, and stabilized in our faith so that we might do the mission God has for us.
Some people are caught up in a search for success. They want to make big money, or be the best-known person in their field, have the biggest office, or be the first in their family to achieve a valued goal. Their life is consumed with being successful.
There are other people who are committed to the search for significance.
The search for success often centers on satisfying Self: getting me what I want (money, prestige, position). When we pursue significance we tend to focus on making a difference in the lives of others. It’s not what we have; it’s what we leave. Our legacy is more important than our bank balance.
The model for ultimate life purpose presented in the New Testament is servanthood, and the
person who best exemplifies this model is Jesus of Nazareth. The Apostle Paul says to Christ-followers, “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness” (Philippians 2:5-7, NIV).
Becoming a servant is essential to fulfilling the mission God has for you.
